As a corneal specialist at the Brook Army Medical Center, and performing consultations with the Army Institute of Surgical Research, I see a large number of soldiers, and referred civilians who suffer from severe facial and eye burn injuries. We also see a number of patients suffering from Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). All of these patients are extremely ill and are at risk for a myriad of ocular complications despite our best efforts, which can lead to chronic eye exposure, irritation and blindness. Your Prokera product has revolutionized our treatment of these patients and has dramatically improved the outcomes of many of our patients. It is now a first line treatment for burn patients with exposure who cannot maintain their ocular surface, for our Stevens Johnsons and TENS patients who exhibit anterior segment inflammation, and for saving the vision of dozens of our warriors injured on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.
On behalf of all of the soldiers, and civilians treated at the military’s only burn unit (the Army Institute of Surgical Research), I wish to thank you for your research efforts. I honestly do not know how we would be able to take care of many of our severely burned patients without Prokera. Please keep up the great work and let me know how I can support your continued efforts in conquering ocular surface disease.
